"God, The Secret Place" Colette Fabry
While driving down the street, I looked out my car window and saw a huge bird flying alongside me. I had never seen such a massive wingspan up close, and if my window had been down, I could have reached out and touched it. I pulled over, stopped the car, and the bird stayed right with me. It continually circled around and above, then randomly came back to the window. I put the window down half way and watched this magnificent creature. The huge wings were strong and made up of smaller, beautifully-iridescent feathers. I had been memorizing Psalms 91 for a few weeks. God, whose Spirit is always teaching, was now giving me this practical picture of the secret place in verse 4; “He shall cover thee with his feathers and under his wings shalt thou trust..."
During the next few weeks, I picked apart the chapter and continually asked the LORD the following questions.
“Where is the secret place?” “Will you show me the secret place?” How do I practically find this place of safety and protection?
-This place where nothing can get to me without going through Him first.
-This place where there is no fear and where no evil can approach me.
-This place where thousands can be fighting right next to me but can’t get near me.
-This place of safe-shadow, like under the wings of my strong bird.
This sounds like the best place to be for all of eternity!
But, where exactly is The Secret Place?
God always answers seekers, especially seekers who seek Him. The answer to my question was smack in the middle of the chapter in verse 9.
“Because thou hast made the LORD, who is my refuge, even the Most High, thy habitation”.
Finally, I clearly saw it.
HE IS THE SECRET PLACE! It's not a place; it's a person.
The secret place is found when we make Him our place to retreat, to dwell, to rest, to be our home. When our view is from His perspective and from His high vantage point. David said the same thing in Ps 119:114 “Thou art my hiding place (cether)..."
The same word is used in “He shall cover (cether) me thee with his feathers and under his wings shalt thou trust”... and it means secret hiding place and covering. HE is that place!
How do we practically make God our hiding place?
David knew how.
He would go to a quiet place early in the morning and meditate on the Most High God. He would run to caves when being chased by enemies and meditate on his God. He laid on His bed, and throughout the night, he thought about God and contemplated how great He is. He would meditate on God in grief, in times of thanksgiving, in times of tribulation, and times of victories. He would get alone and study God's attributes and characteristics. He would leave those places every single time with a stable, proper perspective of His circumstances. Even if his circumstances hadn’t changed, he had changed by being in the Secret place of the Most High. When He was reminded of the truths of who God is He was able to endure anything that came His way. He made God his place of retreat, his dwelling, his rest, and his home. In doing so, something supernatural happened. Something that only those who know God this way will understand. David fell in love with God. He fell in love with the Creator of the universe and the Sovereign molder of hearts.
How do I know that? Because God said to David in verse 14, “Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high because he hath known my name.”
I later learned that this bird flying beside my car was a vulture (eww!) and more than likely saw its shadow in my window, thinking it was another bird. Nonetheless, I got a close-up view of the covering that David speaks of and the place I must run to for hope. The experience drew me into a deeper understanding of God, who is the Secret Place. And I absolutely know that He is all my soul will ever need.
You are my hiding place; you always fill my heart with songs of deliverance,
